September 6, 2017 -- The satirical comedy, Hearts of Palm, follows a group of American corporate executives intent on purchasing a palm oil plantation in the fictional Southeast Asian island nation of Marititu.

Relaxed safety standards, nonexistent environmental regulations, and dirt-cheap labor attract Empire Holdings to close a deal that will either destroy the habitat of endangered orangutans or procure another tract that will force indigenous families from their ancestral lands. This scenario plays out against a local rebellion, a failing romance, a rogue negotiator, a greedy politician and a crazed company security officer.

Hearts of Palm subverts several well-worn tropes, including white savior complex, gender bias, white male privilege and the notion that women don't know how to negotiate.

New to Theatre Esprit Asia are the esteemed Dr. Paul Newman who directs, Sara Woodyard and Kevin Hommes as the naïve and one-night stand executives and Marijke Jones as the crafty government official. Henry winner Arlene Rapal graces TEA’s stage for the third time as the rogue negotiator. Award winning Lori Hansen returns to TEA for the secnd time as the outrageous security officer.

Carol Timblin again stage manages and now also serves as the producer and production manager. Erin Leonard costume designs for the 7th time and Brian Miller, winner of best lighting at the 2016 Colorado Theatre Festival, returns as the set/lighting/sound designer.
