Spirit & Sworded Treks
WorldFest 2018 | Venice, Florida
June 18 to 23, 2018
Theatre Esprit Asia – TEA, the U.S. Southwest’s first and only award winning pan-Asian theater company, only five years old, goes to its first international festival! WorldFest is a weeklong quadrennial theatre festival sponsored by the American Association of Community Theaters.
Participation is by curated invitation. TEA is one of two theaters invited from the United States. This year’s festival features 15 productions from 14 nations, including Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bangladesh, China, Chile, Germany, Israel, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, United Kingdom and the United States.
What do Johnny Unitas, ecstatic sex, Szechuan stir-fry, a Chinese Barbie doll and martial arts have to do with the Tao of spirituality? Find out as Spirit & Sworded Treks examines with cheeky aplomb yet serious inquiry the highs and lows of pursuing a spiritual path in hectic capitalistic America.
Weaving stand-up comedy and storytelling, wielding saber/sword/fan forms with gentle tai-chi chuan, warbling
bad singing with beautiful dancing, this 65-minute tour de force [mature content and language] will leave you laughing and crying, sometimes both at the same time!
Maria Cheng is the founder and artistic director of Theatre Esprit Asia. A playwright, director, actor and choreographer, her works have received critical acclaim across four continents. She is the recipient of major awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guthrie, Harkness, Jerome, McKnight and Rockefeller Foundations.
The New York Times describes Cheng’s work as “…exquisitely
crafted…wickedly funny.” National Public Radio lauds her as “…a consummate theater artist…a complete company unto herself.”
